MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
Tanzania is just as famous for its mountain climbing as for its safaris. We give
clients the opportunity to trek and reach the summits of Mt Kilimanjaro (Kili) and its
close sister, Mt. Meru thanks to our specialised climbing itineraries.
All our guides, as well as being game drive experts, are fully-qualified
mountain guides. One guide and one porter, however, have been labelled as our
“mountain specialists” having climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro over 500 times
between them!
Meru and Kili are entirely different ascends, each appealing to different sorts
of visitors, with many climbing enthusiasts reaching both summits on their
Tanzanian trip.
For an excursion
to the summit of Kili you should allow between 6 to 8 days (depending on your
chosen route), and 4 to 5 days for Meru.
Click on the left side menu or scroll down to find out a little more about each
peak, then
make your way over to our itineraries and rates section to see
the full itineraries and
prices. Please also read the important notes on
mountain climbing rates.
Mount
Kilimanjaro
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
By name, Kilimanjaro is a metaphor for the undeniable beauty of Tanzania and East Africa.
Not only is it this the highest peak on the entire African continent, but also the
highest free-standing mountain on earth. It rises in dramatic isolation from the
surrounding scrubland from 900 metres to 5,895 metres above sea level providing
a breathtaking view of the surrounding plains.

Kilimanjaro is considered to be a relatively easy climb. However, it should not
be underestimated. Not everyone reaches the summit due to altitude sickness or
loss of breath. Still, most healthy climbers can reach the crater rim with
little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination.
There is so much more to Kili than her summit. The ascent of the slopes is a
virtual climatic world tour, from the tropics to the Arctic. Due to the
mountain's equatorial location as well as its high elevation, climbers can
experience almost every climate type on earth during the journey to the top. The
slopes are also covered in mountain forest inhabited by elusive elephant,
leopard, buffalo, the endangered Abbot’s duiker, and other small antelope and
primates.
Our guides can provide you with climbs at your desired level of difficulty or
interest.

Mount Meru
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Meru,
situated 70 Km from Kilimanjaro and rising 4,566 metres high, is Tanzania’s
second highest peak and fifth highest in Africa. Meru is a spectacular volcano
that is still classed as “active”. Having erupted violently some 8,000 years
ago, with minor eruptions approximately every 100
years, Meru was historically than
Kilimanjaro.
The crater floor and the lower slopes rise above the surrounding savannah and
support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of
birds, and also monkeys and leopards. By contrast, the upper slopes are barren
expanses of black volcanic ash and occasional immense boulders of lava.
